The Cultural Story
Between 1831 and 1872, approximately 3,000 West African men, primarily from Elmina in present-day Ghana, were recruited into the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL). Known as the Belanda Hitam, these soldiers settled in the garrison town of Purworejo, Central Java, where they intermarried with Javanese and Indo women, creating a unique Afro-Indo community. Following Indonesian independence, many of these families repatriated to the Netherlands in the 1950s, establishing a tight-knit community in Vianen. This design honors their extraordinary journey by uniting the Adinkra symbol 'Gye Nyame'—representing deep resilience—with the Javanese Kawung motif, a historic symbol of perfection and steadfastness.
